☠ TikTok is dead! What is happening?

The popular social media platform has been facing bans in multiple countries and things are getting complicated...

Hello, beautiful people of the Internet! 👋

Let’s talk about all the TikTok drama for a second, shall we?

😬 TikTok’s Time Up?

Is TikTok’s time up? The popular social media platform has been facing bans in multiple countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. With heightened national security concerns, most of the bans that have been introduced are limited to devices used in the public sector or by the government. The UK has joined allies in taking action against TikTok by enforcing its own restrictions. The BBC has even told employees that they should delete TikTok from corporate phones.

Is this the end of the road for TikTok? Let’s dive into it.

☣ Why are countries banning TikTok?

It all comes down to China.

Governments have expressed concerns that TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, may endanger sensitive user data. Lawmakers and regulators in the West have increasingly expressed concern that TikTok and its parent company may put sensitive user data into the hands of the Chinese government. They have pointed to laws that allow the Chinese government to secretly demand data from Chinese companies and citizens for intelligence-gathering operations.

They are also worried that China could use TikTok’s content recommendations for misinformation.

India was one of the first countries to ban TikTok in June 2020, citing concerns over national security and data privacy. On Friday, New Zealand became the latest country to prohibit the app from being used on any device with access to its parliament.

Countries are afraid China might be spying on them. But don’t worry! You can still use TikTok if you’re not a government official or live in neither of these countries... For now! 🤡

😯 What is going to happen to TikTok?

How would I know? 😜

But this question seems to be popping up a lot.

As TikTok bans spread around the world, many people are wondering what will happen to the app and its users if these bans become more drastic. If countries such as the United States impose a complete ban, users may be forced to delete the app. This would have a significant impact on content creators who use TikTok as a platform.

However, it is important to note that the majority of the bans imposed so far have only applied to public-sector or government employees. So, while TikTok's future is uncertain, it's not all doom and gloom just yet.

🧐 My opinion about it

I don’t believe in platform doom or death sentences. There is uncertainty about the app’s future; that is what I know, and it’s important to remember that we need to wait and see what happens while rethinking what we need to do if things go bad.

So, while we can't predict TikTok's future, we can prepare for different scenarios.

It is important for content creators to have presence on multiple platforms and not rely solely on one app. As a result, if one platform disappeared or is banned, we can still share our work with our audience.

We simply need to be prepared and adapt as needed.

💪 TikTok is taking action

TikTok has been working hard to prove that it’s a safe app and that it doesn’t pose a data security risk. The company even hosted a meeting called ‘Beyond Brand Safety’ with brands and advertisers earlier this year. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said that the app is facing a pivotal moment and rejects the spying allegations.

But despite these concerns, TikTok is still going strong:

  • with more than 150 million active monthly U.S. users.

  • And it’s not just for fun - 5 million U.S. businesses use TikTok to reach customers.

Chew will testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and he’s asking TikTok users to leave comments about what they love about the app so that U.S. lawmakers can hear their voices.
